DENTAL ASSISTING PROGRAM - http://www.southeast.edu/academics/program_dental.asp - The Dental Assisting Program at Southeast Community College began in 1964 and became accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation, in 1965. The program has maintained current CODA status. This means to you, the consumer, that upon graduation from the program, you may sit for the Dental Assisting National Board examination and become a certified dental assistant. This credential offers national recognition of one’s educational status, which provides employment opportunities. This program is located on the Lincoln Campus. Admission to the clinical track portion of the program is during the Fall and Spring quarters of each year. Overview - The Dental Assisting Program is a four-quarter (12-month), face-to-face or online program if taken on a full-time basis. The program may also be taken on a part-time basis, which extends the length to 6 quarters or one-and-a-half years. The program provides opportunities to develop specialized skills in dental health education, chair-side assisting, laboratory procedures, and business office procedures and management. The program provides clinical experiences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the College of Dentistry, Veterans Administration Dental Clinic, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department Dental Clinic, People’s Dental Clinic, and private dental offices. Mission - The Dental Assisting Program’s mission is to meet a community need by providing a CODA-accredited Dental Assisting Program that includes practice in dental offices and clinics, and a planned course of study that enhances the delivery of quality dental health care to the general public. The vocationally educated Dental Assistant is playing an increased role as a member of the dental health team and enhances the care provided by the dental team. For the Dental Assistant to fulfill this role, it is essential to understand the theoretical academic concepts and principles from which techniques and procedures are developed. To become a competent practitioner, the student dental assistant must have opportunities to practice the skills and procedures over an extended period of time under the supervision of instructors, faculty, dentists, dental students and dental assistants. Knowledge and skills essential to develop proficient competencies among dental assistants have been identified. The student dental assistant needs opportunities to acquire this knowledge and these skills in appropriate clinical sites. We believe this can best be accomplished in a community college-directed clinical practice. Requirements - All required remedial or support courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C (70%) PRIOR to entry into the Program. All Dental Assisting Program courses must also be completed with a minimum grade of C+ (75%). If a student receives less than a C+ in any Dental Assisting Program course, the student may recycle into the program in six months, if space is available.
MEDICAL ASSISTING PROGRAM - http://www.southeast.edu/academics/program_med_assist.asp - Special online program requirements: 1. All remedial courses must be completed before acceptance into the online program. 2. Some lab time on campus (SCC-Lincoln). 3. Every effort will be made to have the clinical experience close to the student’s home. 4. The online program is available in 5 quarters. Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016 as the health services industry expands due to technological advances in medicine, and a growing and aging population. According to the Bureaus of Labor Statistics, the medical assisting profession is one of the fastest growing professions today. The medical assistant is an essential link between the doctor and the patient providing support services in a variety of skill areas. The medical assisting program includes instruction in office patient care procedures and basic laboratory techniques. The student also learns office practices and receptionist/secretarial duties related to a medical environment. A medical assistant is an integral member of the healthcare delivery team. The many different roles that are assumed in the medical assisting profession assure a fast moving and challenging career.
